#321: From Sara Blakely's Spanx to Living Her Entrepreneurial Dream with Mary Lou Ortiz
Tune-in for for Episode #321! Some areas discussed this week are her:
-Lessons from Spanx
-Takeaways from always working for entrepreneurs
Her journey as an entrepreneur
-How she capitalized on an opportunity during 2020
A New Jersey native, Mary Lou Ortiz’s love of fashion began nearby in New
York. The city, known as the world’s fashion capital, inspired Ms. Ortiz. From Fashion Week to simply strolling down 5th Avenue in Manhattan, the fashion world was ingrained early on.
She began her career in retail fashion, which enabled her to support her young family
while satisfying her need to be in the fashion industry. Before opening PLUMA, she had the privilege of working for Sara Blakely’s SPANX, an American intimate apparel company, managing her hometown store in Tampa Bay.
The culture she experienced at the organization marked a pivotal point in Mary Lou’s development and gave her the confidence and motivation necessary to start her own business in 2020 during the global pandemic.
She created a comfortable and private shopping experience for women in 2 by appointment-only Salon Suite locations in the Bay area.
Ortiz also personally shopped for over 2,000 clients that still follow her today in her new venture as GM for Heads and Tails in Tampa.
Here she continues to grow her experience and elevate her life and work balance by remaining close to her home and connecting within the South Tampa community.
